Mandeville Canyon
Restoration and a remodel of a one-story single family residence in Brentwood. Oscar winning Art Director Hilyard M. Brown designed this house in 1960. He received the Academy Award for Best Art Direction in 1963 for the movie 'Cleopatra' with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. This post and beam house is nestled on top of a quiet cul-de-sac in the Mandeville Canyon and bridges with one part over the entry driveway. The house has an eclectic mix of mid-century and Japanese elements and the existing floor plan layout was inspired by Brown's work as a set designer and art director. Most of the rooms are designed with an emphasis for a specific view, similar to a movie set design. The main focus is the circular sunken-in living room with a slate floor. bau10 is currently working with the new owners on a careful restoration of the house. The approach and challenge is restoring some parts that are in need of an update by keeping the original design intention and showing the history of the house.
