powersurge

The 3,500 sf powersurge store at the Promenade at Howard Hughes Center offers a space to play and exercise in front of 39 Wii and Xbox console gaming stations and a large competition area. The open layout, bright indirect light and the possibility to experience the action from outside the store invites people to visit powersurge and play. The circular, segmented event space in the center of the store can be secluded with a curtain and provides space for special events, classes and parties. To give the innovative business a unique appearance and identity, we chose main materials that have an association to fitness and fun: plywood for the wall segments, recycled rubber for the floor, basketball 'leather' for the upholstered seating areas and reused bicycle bottle cages as drink holders. Unfinished plywood was chosen to serve as a canvas and to get a patina through heavy use. Based on this idea, we initially suggested some space for tagging on the walls, which we then replaced with stencil art throughout the store. All plywood wall segments have an indirect light feature on top which illuminates the ceiling and the white store walls above. Transforming the traditional image of the pinball hall into the age of Wii and Xbox gaming, we chose a bright gallery atmosphere for powersurge. The store opened in March 2010. www.gopowersurge.com
