Franklin

The Franklin  Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is located on Franklin Avenue, nestled within a neighborhood rich in history. This area seamlessly blends the bohemian spirit of Franklin Village and Los Feliz with the iconic legacies of Old Hollywood and Disney.
The project honors the historic context of its surroundings while introducing a contemporary design approach that blends with the existing fabric of the street.
The site consists of a 1921 colonial house and a newly constructed ADU. The ADU’s design is inspired by its immediate surroundings, with particular attention to the building’s massing and orientation. A prominent gable-facing form directs its presence toward Franklin Avenue, mirroring the architectural language of the neighboring single-family homes.
The ADU’s floor plan is open and flexible. On the first floor, the living area and kitchen flow into a spacious layout, fostering a sense of connection between the interior and the outdoor environment. Large sliding glass doors open to the backyard, enhancing the indoor-outdoor experience. The second-floor features two bedrooms and two bathrooms, including a primary bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. The primary bedroom also has a private balcony offering sweeping views of the Griffith Park Observatory and its famous hills.
Overall, the design of the ADU reflects the neighborhood’s historical roots while introducing a modern perspective. It servesas a unique yet harmonious addition to the Franklin Avenue landscape, adding architectural character to the street.
